Sweet! Steven George Captures the Iowa State Long Jump Championship with a long jump of 22' 10.75".

The Iowa High School State Track Championships are underway at Drake University and to go along with Steven's success in the long jump Justin Rocca qualified for the final of the 200m dash which will run on Saturday.

Also today Avery Gibson qualified for the State Singles in Tennis which will begin June 1st. We will post the reports from the coaches soon.

Maharishi School has a great week as spring sports teams move into the play off season

*Girls Varsity Team wins first two district matches and moves on to the next round. *Boys Track Team qualifies in six events for the state track meet and team is third overall at District meet. *Girls Track Team qualifies in the 100m run for state track. *Boys Varsity Golf Team finishes first at Sectionals and moves on to the District Championship. *Boys Varsity Tennis Team triumphs at district. *Track Team sets four school records at conference meet.

Report from track coach: We had a very good night, with only 8 team members we scored 66 points and tied for 3rd in the Super conference track meet.

Steven George won the long jump by more then 2 feet over second place with a jump of 21' 2'' on a poor runway. Steven came back to win the 100 meters into a slight head wind with a time of 11.28. He got a slow start but came back to over take the lead for a good win.

Justin ran only his second 400 since his injury and looked very strong through out the race. He crossed the finish with a new school record of 51.00. Justin came back later to win the 200 meters in another school record 22.78. He told me later he held back and only ran fast enough to win and test the strength of his leg.

In the 800 meter run Michael Macey, who was still recovering from a tough workout two days ago, took second with a controlled PR run of 2:06.25. Michael is ready to run about 3 seconds faster.

In the 1600 meter run Newell Allen ran a PR 5:16.

I'm very happy with the progress of our squad and love the way they have responded to the championship part of the season. All of them are peaking at the right time and are becoming more focused and strong willed. We look forward to a successful District Championship this Saturday at Danville H.S. starting at 10am. The top two in each event advance to the State Championship. Wish us luck.

The Girls Varsity Tennis Team has 7-2 win over Fairfield. Boys Varsity Golf Team has second place finish at Super Conference chanpionship.

Maharishi School Girls Tennis Team topped previously undefeated Fairfield 7-2 in girls tennis yesterday at the Fairfield Middle School despite not having their usual number two player. The competition began with the Pioneers sweeping the doubles to gain control before taking four of six in the singles. The scores:

#1 FF-Jennifer Bradfield beat Avery Gibson 8-2

#2 FF-Megan Wetrich defeated Anila Cunningham 8-4

#3 MS-Brianna Eason 8-4 over Jean Matzen

#4 MS-Sheila Higgins knocked off Brianna Thornton 8-3

#5 MS-Bonnie Carter beat Cassandra Hayne 8-3

#6 MS-Molly Cutler was leading 3-0 and then won by injury default over Kim Thorn

Doubles

#1 Gibson/Cunningham topped Bradfield/Thornton 8-4

#2 Higgins/Carter knocked off Wetrich/Matzen 8-4

#3 Eason/Cutler got by Hayne/Thorn 8-6

MSAE is 3 and 2 while this was the Trojans first loss in 10 duals.

    Golf Report: The weather was back to its wonderful ways for the Conference tournament with clouds clearing away for a sunny, warm, breezy day.  Heavy rain the previous two days caused wet ground conditions that mandated lift, clean, and place.

*  Sheaffer is a great course for Conference.  It has a leg up on most of the State Tournament, sectional, and district courses just by virtue of being an eighteen hole course.  The fact that we play Conference there most years gives it a continuity for year to year scoring comparisons, just like the Masters which is always at Augusta National as distinct from the other majors which rotate amongst various courses. 

*  The Southern Division schools played the back nine first and then played the front nine.  So when you look at Pioneer scores you'll see that they had an okay start with a 168 for their first nine holes, but then came on strong for their second nine holes with a 156 that came up just one stroke short.  Sam lead the charge with the field's low front nine score of 37.  Danny's 38 was the second lowest and though Mitra's score didn't count, he was also a leader of the charge in a way by recovering from his rough 47 start to finish with a valiant 39.

*  There were three main contenders for the overall title.  Columbus Junction, starting with the Northern schools on the front nine, looked to have the upper hand with a 158, over Notre Dame's 167 and Maharishi's 168 on the back nine.  But when the schools switched nines it turned out that holes 10 through 18 played tougher for everyone and Notre Dame (156) and Maharishi (156) were able to make up the difference on Columbus who left the door open with a 167. Golf Report for May 4th match

Track team continues its solid season at the New London track meet. Steven George has a second place at the Drake Relays in the Long Jump

The Boys' Track Team had four first place finishes, two seconds and a third on tuesday. The boys had a first and second in the long jump, a first in the 800, and first in the 4x400 and the 4x800 relays.

The team has already broken 4 school records, including a 23-ft. long jump by Steven George. Steven will be competing at the Drake relays on Friday April 28th.

Sam Goldstein jumped 21 ft. 1/4 inch in his first jump, which was a meet record in Washington, Iowa.

Justin Rocca has set two school records in the 100-meter (10.93) and the 200-meter.

The relay team has also set a school record in the 4 X 100.

     The Boys' Tennis Team came first at the Pella tournament on Saturday April 22nd. There were nine teams present with the Pioneers placing first and second in the doubles and second place in the singles.

The Pioneers have now won four of their first five head to head matches with the only loss being to the defending 2A state champion. These matches include a 9-0 victory over Fort Madison, 9-0 over Iowa City High and Fairfield and 6-3 over Waterloo Columbus.

The team also placed third overall in the Cedar Rapids Warrior Tournament, and came in first among the Class 1A schools. Coach Eyre is very happy with the progress of the team.

     The Girls' Tennis Team also had their first match. They went to Davenport during spring break with a partial squad. Avery Gibson was outstanding with a first place finish among the #1 singles players. Avery also had a #1 Victory over Columbus Waterloo Saturday. It was her first match win over Andre Schupbach.

     The Boys' Golf Team played their first match of the year on Tuesday. They handled themselves admirably, finishing third in a field of mostly 3A schools. This is the first time that the golf team has played an 18-hole tournament so early in the schedule, which is a clear indication that we are in for an exciting and successful golf season this year. The team also had their first two head to head matches with a victory over Stritch on Thursday and a victory over Central Lee on Tuesday. At the Central Lee match Danny Steinberg had a one under par 35.

Pioneers Season Ends and Everyone's Heartfelt Congratulations Go Out to All the Players - Sofia Iwobi Chosen 1st Team All State

The Girls Varsity basketball team played a tough opponent at the Girls State Basketball Tournament on Monday, March 6. The Pioneers lost 50-37 to Treynor to end a season that had many outstanding highlights.

This was the first appearance for the Maharishi School Girl's Varsity Basketball team at the State Tournament. The team of 15 players only had two seniors and the future of the team looks bright.

Over 1,000 supporters from Fairfield were in Des Moines Monday for the game and everyone thanks the Girls for an incredible season. See Game Report   Iwobi chosen Courier Player of the Year

Maharishi School on to The State Tournament

Pioneers are Regional Champs and are going to the State tournament with their 78-75 triple overtime victory over Highland Saturday night. This was a battle between two of Iowa's best players as Maharishi School's Sofia Iwobi scored a career high 49 points (School record). Rachel Yeggy had 46 for Highland. Yeggy hit a three pointer to give Highland a 73-70 lead with two minutes to play, but Iwobi came right back and hit two consecutive threes to pull the game out of the bag and send the Pioneers to the State tournament in Des Moines, March 6-10.

Boys Varsity Basketball Season Ends on Last Second Shot in District Game

The Boys Varsity Basketball Team's season ended as Keota hit a 35 foot last second shot. The Pioneers, down most of the evening, put on a heroic comeback. Down 11 with three minutes to play, Christian Hoffmann made a running twisting layup with 3.6 seconds to play to tie the game at 53. However Keota made a once in a season desperation shot to cut the Pioneers' hopes for overtime. Great game and congratulations to the Pioneers for a highly entertaining season.

Maharishi School Girls Basketball Team Wins District Championship

Girls Varsity Team defeated Winfield 58-49 to win the Girls District. Sofia had 25 points and 13 rebounds. Bonnie had 9 points and 11 rebounds. Ami had 11 points.

This was a terrific win for the Pioneers as Winfield is considered one of the top teams in Southeast Iowa. Maharishi School jumped out to a 13-5 first quarter lead and a 24 to 16 half time lead.

Maharishi School Defeats Highland in Superconference Tournament

Saturday, February 6, the Varsity Girls defeated 13th ranked Highland 51-39. Sofia had 22 points, Ami 11, and Shelia 9.

Highland is a possible Regional Final opponent for the Pioneers. This was one of the Pioneers' most balanced games this year with great defense and seven Pioneers on the score sheet. Next game is Tuesday, February 28 at New London at .
