The Parents’ Memo is our Lower School newsletter for the parents of the students. This Memo comes out each week with the news of the past week as well as future events and items of interest for the parents.

Dear Parentss,

IMPORTANT REMINDERS AND SCHOOL CLOSINGS

Happy Spring! It is hard to believe that March is almost over and that next Friday, March 24th, will mark the end of our 3rd quarter of School. On Monday, March 27th, the Middle and Upper School will be taking a grading day, and students in 7-12 will have no school. This does NOT apply to Lower School.

Please remember that Spring Break is the week of April 3rd-April 7th, during which time there will be no school.

During the next few weeks, teachers will be preparing report cards and are looking forward to visiting with you at Parent/Teacher Conferences, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, April 13th and all day Friday, April 14th.

The Lower School will be closed the afternoon of April 13th and all day Friday, April 14th so that parents may meet with teachers. 

Please note that Kindergarten will be in session Thursday morning, April 13th, but not on Friday, April 14th. 

I encourage all of you to attend these conferences, as it is an excellent opportunity to review your child’s progress and development over the past several months. You may call the Lower School office beginning Wednesday, April 5th to schedule your appointments.

2006  ANNUAL SPRING FUNDRAISER

Friday, May 5, our Spring Fundraiser, “Celebrating Maharishi Yagya Performances,” will be held in the Henry Ogden Clark Auditorium.

This year’s Spring Fundraiser is gaining great momentum, as everyone is becoming more and more excited about the School offering Maharishi Yagya performances to our extended meditating community.

A Maharishi Yagya performance works on the most powerfullevels of consciousness to remove obstacles and enliven those laws of nature that support us. The Yagyas requested include ones for wealth, perfect health, enlightenment, and to increase the numbers in our community. There will be between three and five Yagyas recommended.

One hundred dollars includes you in the Yagyas that will take place from April 28th to May 5th. His Excellency Dr. Bevan Morris was the first to donate!  You will have the opportunity to write a note to Maharishi and attach a photo of yourself. These will be put in a book and sent at the conclusion of the Yagyas.

This rare opportunity will bring a powerful wave of coherence to you and the entire community, and will also be a great time to be in the Golden Domes to maximize the benefits from this historic week.

SPRING CELEBRATION

This Monday, March 20th at 8:00 pm, Maharishi School will host the 2006 Spring Celebration, to be held in the Henry Ogden Clark Auditorium. March 20th is the first day of spring and we will welcome it by reviewing the achievements of Fairfield, Vedic City, M.U.M., and Maharishi School, and by honoring four outstanding individuals who have contributed to the community in their areas of expertise. There will be celebration cake and entertainment for all.

STUDENTS ATTEND YOUNG WRITERS’ CONFERENCE

Last Friday, Mrs. Lynch accompanied students from grades 3-6 to the Young Writers’ Conference at William Penn College in Oskaloosa. The keynote speaker, David Greenberg, poet and author, thrilled the students with his lively presentation, reciting his poetry and sharing tips on writing and getting published.

The day was filled with sharing and discussing writing with students from other schools. Each student went to a sharing session to read and listen to original stories and poetry. They also attended two workshops of their choice in topics ranging from telling pet stories and making travel logs with Powerpoint     presentations, to poetry writing and making Laura Ingalls Wilder come to life.

There are many students who love to write, but each year only two or three students from each class are selected to represent their class at the conference. This year’s attendees included: Kadie Roberts, Avery Travis, Matthew Rowe, and Demitri Makeig from the Intermediate grades; and Essa Johnson, Angelia Mahaney, Jonina Thorsteinsdottir, Chosie Titus, Merrick Allen-Winter, Jaren Fleischman, Ryan Smelcer, and Thomas Weiss from the Upper Elementary grades.

MAHARISHI SCHOOL GREENHOUSE SEEDS ARE HERE!

If you ordered garden seeds, they are ready for pick up in the Lower School Office.

If you haven’t already ordered your seeds, it’s not too late! We have arranged a great sale on organic seeds from Seeds of Change. The normal price for these seed packets is $2.49 plus shipping. We are offering them at the special price of $2.00 with no shipping costs (additional discount for faculty and staff). Seeds will continue to be delivered to the Lower School Office. If you have any questions, call Diana at 919-3645. All proceeds go to developing more educational programs in the Maharishi School outdoor learning center —the greenhouse, orchard and gardens.  

MAHARISHI UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS WIN
EIGHT NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS

Congratulations to four students from Mrs. Waksman’s Photography I class who placed in the 2006 Texas A&M University-Commerce National High School Photography Shoot-Out. This year there were 2,560 prints from 37 schools entered in the competition.

Tenth graders Lane Weaver and David Fulcher received second place honors, 12th grader Molly Brooks received a 3rd place honor, and eleventh grader Toby Briggs received an Honorable Mention. 

The judges acknowledged the high quality of the work entered. They were impressed by the level of design, composition and conceptualization involved in the imagery.

TIPS TO STAY HEALTHY

With the change of season, the following message seems timely. If a child has a fever, it is best to keep him/her home until he/she is free of a temperature for 24 hours. When a child has a fever, it is important to rest! A child who is sneezing and/or coughing frequently is highly contagiousand should stay home.

Another important point is hand washing. One of the best and easiest ways to help prevent the spread of illness is through regular hand washing.

In addition, we ask that if a child is going to be late to school due to illness, either at the beginning of the day or after lunch, you please send a note of explanation. If children arrive after 9:30 a.m. or 1:05 p.m., they are marked tardy. If they aren’t feeling well, and need a little extra rest, a note from a parent will give them an excused tardy. However, it is strongly encouraged that children be kept home all day if they aren't feeling well.

PE REMINDER

Thank you for making sure that your child is in full PE uniform. On the days that your child has PE, please make sure she or he wears sturdy outdoor or athletic shoes. Classes often jog to the Field House or Rec Center, and on nice days PE will be outside. Indoor shoes will continue to stay in the athletic facility.

REMINDER

Please remember to organize lunch time and play dates for your child before school. It is best if we don’t interrupt the teaching activities in the classroom, and it is more settling for your child if she or he knows the plans for the day ahead of time. Thank you very much.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

•Spring Break Dates: Monday, April 3rd through Friday,April 7th.

• Lunchtime policy: According to the Student and Parent Handbook, all students who are not part of our supervised lunch program may return to School no earlier than 12:50 pm. They should proceed directly to their classrooms and begin their silent reading program.

Lower School students may not go to the M.U.M. Bookstore unless they are accompanied by an adult. Parents, your cooperation is really needed in this area, as too many students are returning too early from lunch and are unsupervised. Thank you.

• Maharishi School Store: The School Store is located in the Henry Ogden Clark Auditorium, and hours are 8:30-9:45 a.m., daily.
